In 2013, Pui – a two-year-old male Thai Bangkaew – was wondering through the streets of his community near Bangkok, sniffing through roadside trash.
The sweet little ginger dog came across a white plastic bag, filled with something that appeared to be moving.
Gently taking it from the dump, Pui carried the bag by its handles and took it home to his owner, Gumnerd Thongmak.
Once he returned to his house, he placed the bag on the patio and barked loudly to get the attention of his owner.
According to the Bangkok Post, Thongmak’s 12-year-old niece Sudarat was the first to answer Pui’s demanding calls. Joining the pup on the deck, Sudarat eagerly opened the package he presented.
When she saw what was inside, she screamed for her mother.
Inside the plastic bag was a newborn baby with her umbilical cord still attached.
Sudarat’s parents rushed the tiny, weak baby to the hospital, where doctors determined she was born prematurely – at around seven months – weighing only 4 pounds 8 ounces.
The baby was given oxygen and other treatments at the hospital and survived the tragic ordeal.
“It′s lucky that little Pui found the baby. It was a surprise to us, since little Pui never brought anything home, only barking at strangers when he’s out and about,” said Pummarat, Sudarat’s mother, who expressed interest in adopting the child. “Must be destiny that brought us together.”
After Pui was named a hero for saving the girl’s life, the dog received a leather collar and a medal from the local Red Cross Chapter. The Thongmaks were also awarded $300 to help feed their furry hero, along with three other dogs who lived at the house.
At this time, there are no updates on who adopted the baby, nor do we know the identity of her mother.
